For the past six months, Patricia Ward was voting online in a monthly contest held by a San Diego-based company that sells bamboo flooring, fencing and green building products.
Each month, Cali Bamboo customers can enter a “Project of the Month” contest by sending in pictures that showcase their works of art.
Finalists are chosen for their creativity by the company’s clients.
While Ward, 56, of Lake Worth, had been voting all these months for other contestants, now she was the one looking for votes.
“I don’t think I’ll win,” Ward said sheepishly before she found out this week that she placed third. “Some people have come along very quickly. They must know more people than I do.”
The first-place winner was scheduled to be announced Tuesday. The top three winners receive $500, $250 and $100 Cali Bamboo gift cards.
Ward paid $4,000 to construct a bamboo fence around her backyard pool.
She said she chose the material because it was cheaper than wood or chain-link and it was more ecologically desirable.
“It was the perfect choice,” she said. “Come this winter, I think I’m going to have a whole lot of company I wasn’t expecting.”
Tanner Haigwood, vice president at Cali Bamboo, has only seen pictures of Ward’s fence, but said he loved what he saw.
“It looks very relaxing,” Haigwood said. “The fence really sets the ambiance, and the bamboo really accentuates what she’s done. It makes me want to lay beside that pool.”
Ward designed her pool around statues of two kneeling Thai women holding a bowl, which she uses to hold flowers or candles
